National Nurse Practitioner Week November 8-14, 2015
HAPPY NURSE PRACTITIONER WEEK to all my amazing and accomplished colleagues! This year we are celebrating 50 years of Nurse Practitioner service in the United States. Fifty years ago, the first NP program was established at the University of Colorado. Now, 50 years later, Nurse Practitioners celebrate more than 205,000 NPs licensed to practice in the United States.
National Nurse Practitioner Week is a time to celebrate our exceptional health care providers and remind lawmakers of the importance of removing outdated barriers to practice. By removing these barriers, NPs will be allowed to practice to the full extent of their education and clinical experience in order to promote a higher quality service to the patients that we serve. This can only be achieved if we become more actively involved in creating awareness in our communities and educating the public and lawmakers about the role that Nurse Practitioners have in our healthcare systems.
My challenge to each of you is to GET INVOLVED. There are so many opportunities available at local, state, and national levels. Our organization has some exciting ways to get involved locally coming up in the remainder of 2015 and into 2016, watch for upcoming announcements to find out how you can become involved. Perhaps the single most important way to promote NP awareness is through contacting or visiting the district offices of your local State Representatives and Senators. Below is a link that will be helpful to create awareness. It is an exciting time to be a Nurse Practitioner! Thank you for everything you do!
